Forestry Mulching Cost Per Acre in Ocala and Marion County

The per-acre chart

These are the same three tiers on our public price chart, and they are the numbers we quote from. The tier is decided by what the mulching head has to chew through, not by how the parcel looks from the road.

Small jobs carry a half-day minimum, which matters on the tiny parcels covered further down. Everything else that moves a mulching quote lives inside those three rows.

What puts an acre at $1,500 or at $3,000

Palmetto is the whole story more often than not. Saw palmetto reads as "just bushes" from a truck window, but its root crowns are the slowest, hardest-chewing material a mulching head faces. An acre of thick palmetto sits at the dense end of the chart no matter how short it looks. Wax myrtle, blackberry and sapling sweetgum — the soft wall that takes over an idle pasture — is the moderate tier, and it goes fast.

Tree size sets a hard line. A forestry mulcher handles trees up to roughly six to eight inches. Anything bigger comes out by other means, with the leftover stumps ground below grade on the same trip, so a parcel with a few big oaks scattered through the scrub gets a combined quote rather than a per-acre one. If the trees you want gone are all small, you are squarely on the chart.

Access and wet ground. A machine that drives straight off the trailer onto open road frontage keeps a job at the bottom of its tier. Squeezing between two occupied houses, working under power lines, or waiting on a soggy corner to dry so the tracks don't sink is slow — and slow is what you are billed for.

Why a small parcel costs more per acre than a big one

Machines don't teleport. Loading the mulcher, trucking it across the county, unloading, and walking the parcel costs about the same whether the job is a quarter acre or twenty. On a Silver Springs Shores infill lot all of that overhead lands on one small piece of ground, which is why lots that size quote flat instead of per acre and why the half-day minimum exists. On five acres of Summerfield mini-farm the same mobilization spreads over twenty times the ground and the machine spends the day producing instead of loading. That is why per-acre pricing steps down as acreage climbs, and why five overgrown acres often cost far less than five times one.

A worked example: three acres behind a Summerfield house

Picture a common Marion County job — the back three acres bought for horses that went to scrub over ten idle years. Walking it, two acres are light scrub (blackberry, wax myrtle, sweetgum saplings you can push over) and the acre along the tree line is dense palmetto. Priced tier by tier, it comes out like this:

Quoted the lazy way — three acres across the full $1,500–$3,000 band — the same parcel reads $4,500–$9,000. The walk-through is what narrows several thousand dollars of range down to fifteen hundred, which is why we don't quote mulching from a satellite photo. And for scale, the same three acres cleared and grubbed for construction would run $4,000–$8,000 and up per acre, or $12,000–$24,000 and up. Nobody is pouring a slab behind those horses, so nobody should be paying for grubbing.

Mulching or clear-and-grub — make sure the quote says which

The gap between $2,000 an acre and $8,000 an acre is almost always this fork. Mulching shreds standing vegetation into mulch where it grew: nothing dug, nothing loaded, nothing hauled, no dump fees. Clearing and grubbing digs stumps and roots out below grade and trucks everything away, which is non-negotiable under a building pad and pure waste under a pasture. A written quote should say plainly which one you are buying; ours itemize it. What the price buys, and what happens next

You are paying for one tracked machine and one operator, and the result is walkable land by the end of the day with a layer of mulch on it — no burn pile waiting on a Florida Forest Service authorization, no dump trailers, no scraped-bare sand blowing across the neighbor's fence. Two honest expectations come with the number. Mulching cuts at ground level, so palmetto will push regrowth within a couple of seasons; a maintenance pass every year or two keeps reclaimed land reclaimed, and it prices at the light-scrub tier because there is far less to chew. And before any quote is written we walk the parcel for gopher tortoise burrows, because an active burrow means a state permit conversation before that corner of the land is touched. Protected means protected whether the machine has tracks or tires.
